NOEL: CHRISTMAS EVE, 1913 Music & Lyrics by Bridges and Holdridge Sung
by John Denver on A Christmas Together (1979)
ch]G[/ch
A frosty Christmas eve, when the stars were shining
ch]Em[/ch] [ch]C[/ch] [ch]D[/ch
I traveled forth alone, where westward falls the hill
ch]C[/ch] [ch]D[/ch] [ch]C[/ch] [ch]D[/ch
And for many, many a village, in the darkness of the valley
ch]G[/ch] [ch]C[/ch] [ch]G[/ch
Distant music reached me, peals of bells were ringing.
ch]G[/ch
Then sped my thoughts to olden times, to that first of Christmases
ch]Em[/ch] [ch]C[/ch] [ch]D[/ch
When shepherds who were watching, heard music in the fields
ch]C[/ch] [ch]D[/ch] [ch]C[/ch] [ch]D[/ch
And they sat there and they marveled, and they knew they could not tell
ch]G[/ch] [ch]C[/ch] [ch]G[/ch
Whether it were angels, or the bright stars a-singing
ch]G[/ch
But to me heard afar, it was starry music
ch]Em[/ch] [ch]C[/ch] [ch]D[/ch
The singing of the angels, the comfort of our Lord
ch]C[/ch] [ch]D[/ch] [ch]C[/ch] [ch]D[/ch
Words of old that come a traveling, by the riches of the times
ch]G[/ch] [ch]C[/ch] [ch]G[/ch
And I softly listened, as I stood upon the hill
ch]C[/ch] [ch]G[/ch
And I softly listened, as I stood upon the hill
