STRAWBERRY CAKE
JOHNNY CASH
CAPO: 2nd FRET
INTRO:
VERSE:
ch]G[/ch] [ch]D[/ch
In New York city just walking the street
ch]G[/ch
Ran out of money had nothing to eat
ch]C[/ch
I stopped at the Plaza, that fancy hotel
ch]D[/ch
Where you can check in if you're well to do well...
ch]G[/ch] [ch]D[/ch
The first of July and a hundred and four
ch]G[/ch
I stopped at the Plaza's front revolving door
ch]C[/ch
I stepped in the door and went around for a ride
ch]D[/ch
Treatin' myself to the cool air inside
ch]G[/ch] [ch]D[/ch
Then I found myself in a chandeliered room
ch]G[/ch
Where people were dining and I hid in the gloom
ch]C[/ch
My hunger pains hurt 'til I thought I would break
ch]D[/ch] [ch]G[/ch
When a waiter brought out a big strawberry cake
CHORUS:
ch]G[/ch] [ch]D[/ch] [ch]G[/ch
Oh that strawberry cake
ch]C[/ch] [ch]G[/ch
Oh that strawberry cake
ch]C[/ch] [ch]G[/ch
Out in California them berries were grown
ch]C[/ch] [ch]G[/ch
And into this city them berries were flown
ch]D[/ch] [ch]G[/ch
For making that strawberry cake
VERSE:
ch]G[/ch] [ch]D[/ch
Then I thought of Oxnard, just north of LA
ch]G[/ch
Where I picked strawberries for many a day
ch]C[/ch
Hard work with no future for the harvest was done
ch]D[/ch
And I headed eastward a-travelin' by thumb
ch]G[/ch] [ch]D[/ch
And nobody wanted me here in this town
ch]G[/ch
I felt like a stray dog they all kick around
ch]C[/ch
Them berries reminded me of my bad breaks
ch]D[/ch] [ch]G[/ch
I'm hungry and I want that strawberry cake
CHORUS:
ch]G[/ch] [ch]D[/ch] [ch]G[/ch
I deserve that strawberry cake
ch]C[/ch] [ch]G[/ch
Deserve that strawberry cake
ch]C[/ch] [ch]G[/ch
I ran and I grabbed it then out the side door
ch]C[/ch] [ch]G[/ch
Into Central Park through the bushes I tore
ch]D[/ch] [ch]G[/ch
Holdin' my strawberry cake
VERSE:
ch]G[/ch] [ch]D[/ch
I look back behind me and what do I see
ch]G[/ch
The chef and headwaiter and the maître d
ch]C[/ch
I had a nice helpin' of cake as I ran
ch]D[/ch
I gobble them berries as fast as I can
ch]G[/ch] [ch]D[/ch
They're closin' the gap as I slowed down to eat
ch]G[/ch
But the cake brought a new surge of power to my feet
ch]C[/ch
I hid in the bush when the lead I did take
ch]D[/ch] [ch]G[/ch
And I quietly finished my strawberry cake
CHORUS:
ch]G[/ch] [ch]D[/ch] [ch]G[/ch
I ate all that strawberry cake
ch]C[/ch] [ch]G[/ch
That fine fancy strawberry cake
ch]C[/ch] [ch]G[/ch
Someone at the plaza is without dessert
ch]C[/ch] [ch]G[/ch
But for the first time in days now my belly don't hurt
ch]D[/ch] [ch]G[/ch
I'm full of strawberry cake
