WITH A MIXTURE OF CHORDS AND TABS IN BOTH GUITAR AND BASS,
DEPENDING ON THE SECTION***

- I have different types of verses marked numerically (Verse I,II,etc.)
- If the guitar/synth and bass parts are written as one system, the tab
staves will be beamed together. If they’re not, they’re not to be played
at the same time.
- Even though guitar doesn’t play the brass lines in parts II and III, I
wrote out the rhythm and voicing that would work best with the band.
- If the rhythm is confusing, break it down to the sixteenth. I wrote it
so that all dashes (----) are sixteenths, and all of the rhythms, no
matter how syncopated they are, are represented here exactly as is!
So a simple eighth rhythm would look like: |0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-| If THAT
isn’t enough of a guide, I include rhythmic notation for every tab, in
the form of X...X... to represent “1e&a2e&a” notation (with Xs being
the strong downbeat).
LEGEND FOR POSSIBLY UNFAMILIAR TERMS
- “Tacet” is music-speak for “don’t play”. So if a section on a tab is
marked with, say, “TACET 2X”, don’t play the area inside the tacet on the
second go around.
- “n/c” is another common musician term to denote “no chord”. Rest up your
overheating mind when you see n/c!
- “gtr.” = guitar
- “synth.” = synthesizer
- “pno.” = piano
- “DS” = drums or drum-set
- “hns” = horns (brass ensemble)
- “DM” = drum machine
- “x” (as in, “2x” or “4th x”) = time
- “tutti” is a musical term that says that everyone is playing together.
