John Denver was one of the selected people to go into space with NASA's space shuttle program in 1986.
After one year of training together with the other ones selected, in the week before the take-off John was
called and he was told an extra crew member would go with meaning there wasn't enough room for John.
Furious as he was he still watched the live broadcast of the space shuttle take off.
Then in 73 seconds after the laucnch the space shuttle exploded, killing every one in the shuttle.
After this disaster John wrote this song...
Intro:
Verse:
ch]C[/ch
Well I guess that you probably know by now
ch]Am[/ch
I was one who wanted to fly
ch]F[/ch] [ch]G[/ch] [ch]C[/ch
I wanted to ride on that arrow of fire right up into heaven
ch]C[/ch
And I wanted to go for every man
ch]Am[/ch
Every child, every mother of children
ch]F[/ch] [ch]G[/ch] [ch]C[/ch
I wanted to carry the dreams of all people right up to the stars
ch]C[/ch
And I prayed that I'd find an answer there
ch]Am[/ch
Or maybe I would find a song
ch]F[/ch] [ch]G[/ch] [ch]C[/ch
Giving a voice to all of the hearts that cannot be heard
ch]C[/ch
And for all of the ones who live in fear
ch]Am[/ch
And all of those who stand apart
ch]F[/ch] [ch]G[/ch] [ch]C[/ch
My being there would bring us a little step closer together
Chorus:
ch]F[/ch
They were flying for me
ch]G[/ch] [ch]C[/ch
They were flying for everyone
ch]F[/ch] [ch]G[/ch] [ch]C[/ch
They were trying to see a brighter day for each and everyone
ch]F[/ch
They gave us their light
ch]G[/ch] [ch]Am[/ch
They gave us their spirit and all they could be
ch]F[/ch] [ch]G[/ch] [ch]C[/ch
They were flying for me
ch]F[/ch] [ch]G[/ch] [ch]C[/ch
They were flying for me
Bridge:
ch]F[/ch] [ch]G[/ch
And I wanted to wish on the Milky Way
ch]C[/ch] [ch]G[/ch] [ch]Am[/ch] [ch]G[/ch
And dance upon a falling star
ch]F[/ch] [ch]Dm[/ch] [ch]F[/ch] [ch]G[/ch
I wanted to give myself and free myself, and join myself with it all

The promise of tomorrow is real

Children of spaceship Earth

The future belongs to us all
